Power Outage & No-Power Electrician in Silver Spring, MD
Lights out is not always the utility’s problem. We work out whether the power is out on the street or only inside your house, and fix the part that is ours to fix.

No power at home: the utility’s problem, or yours?
When the lights go out, the first question is whether the whole neighborhood is dark. If neighbors have power and you do not, the cause is usually inside your own electrical system or at the connection between your house and the utility’s lines. If the street is dark, it is the utility’s job, and an electrician cannot restore it. Knowing which it is saves hours of waiting for the wrong fix.
Inside the house, no-power calls have a short list of likely causes: a tripped main breaker, a tripped or failed GFCI that feeds a whole chain of outlets, a burned connection at the panel, or damage after a storm to the service mast, meter base or the wires that come into the house. Sometimes the whole house is not dark at all, only half of it: some lights dim or run brighter and some outlets are dead, which usually means one leg of the incoming power has failed.
Silver Spring has mature trees and powerful summer thunderstorms, so storm damage is a real pattern here: limbs bringing down service wires, a pulled-away weatherhead, a meter base knocked loose. In those cases the utility typically needs the customer’s side repaired and inspected before it will reconnect, and that is where we come in. We cannot promise to beat the utility to a neighborhood-wide outage, but we can help with the part that lives in your house.
Signs the problem is in your house, not on the street
If you can answer yes to any of these, call us and tell us what you see:
- Neighbors have power and you do not. If the streetlights and nearby houses are on, the outage is likely on your side of the meter.
- Half the house is dead or odd. Some lights dim and others brighten, or only some outlets work. That can mean a failed leg of the incoming service.
- The main breaker keeps tripping. A main that will not stay on points to a serious overload or fault that needs diagnosing, not just resetting.
- Visible damage after a storm. A bent service mast, a hanging wire, a cracked meter base. Stay clear of it and call the utility and an electrician.
- A burning smell or scorch marks at the panel. Leave the panel alone and call. Treat it as urgent.
How we handle a no-power call
Check whether the outage is local to you
Before anything else, we confirm whether it is the street or your house, including looking at the utility’s outage reports for your area.
Check the panel and the incoming service
We look at the main, the breakers and any tripped GFCIs, and test the voltage at the panel to see what is coming in.
Repair the failure on your side
Whether it is a failed breaker, a burned connection or storm damage to the mast or meter base, we make the repair or lay out what it takes.
Coordinate the inspection and reconnect
Where the utility requires an inspection before it restores power, we explain the steps, and get the house ready for them.
What affects the price of a no-power repair
The price depends on what failed, and there are three common situations. These are what move the number:
What failed
A tripped breaker or GFCI is a quick fix. A burned panel connection or a failed meter base is a larger repair.
Whether it is utility or customer equipment
The customer typically owns the mast and meter base. Where the utility owns the equipment, we point you to them instead of charging for it.
Permits and inspection
Service repairs usually require a permit and inspection before the utility reconnects, which affects timing and cost.
Time and access
Evenings, weekends and storm-heavy days put a lot of calls in the same window. Tell us how urgent it is when you call.

Power Outage & No-Power Electrician questions, answered
How do I know if the power is out only at my house?
Look outside. If streetlights and neighbors’ houses have power and yours does not, the problem is probably on your side. You can also check the utility’s outage map. If the whole area is listed as out, it is the utility’s repair.
Who do I call first, the utility or an electrician?
If a wire is down or sparking, call 911 and the utility and stay well away. If the outage seems limited to your house, check the breakers, then call an electrician. If neighbors are out too, call the utility.
My power came back but some outlets do not work. Why?
An outage can trip GFCI outlets or breakers on the way back, or expose a loose connection that was already weak. Press RESET on GFCI outlets in the kitchen, baths and garage, then check the panel.
Why are half my lights dim and the other half bright?
Homes get two incoming power legs. If one is lost, devices on that leg stop working and those on the other can run at the wrong voltage. It can damage appliances, so shut off major loads and call.
Can I use a generator during an outage?
Only with the right connection. Plugging a generator into a wall outlet can send power back out through the lines and injure utility workers, and doing it without a transfer switch is unsafe. If you plan to use a generator, ask us about the right setup.
Will the utility reconnect me after storm damage to my meter?
Usually the damaged equipment has to be repaired and inspected first, and the utility reconnects after that. We explain which steps apply to your address, so you are not guessing.
