Light Fixture Installation in Silver Spring, MD
A new pendant, chandelier or vanity light changes a room more than almost any other single upgrade, as long as it is hung securely and wired correctly.

Hanging a fixture is the easy part. Hanging it right is the job.
Swapping a light fixture sounds like a ten-minute job, and sometimes it is. But the fixture is only the visible end of a circuit, and what is behind it decides how the work goes. The box has to be strong enough to carry the fixture’s weight, the wiring has to be in good condition, and the connections have to be made with the right wire nuts or connectors for the type of wire in the ceiling.
Older homes make this more interesting. In many Silver Spring houses built before the 1960s, a fixture swap uncovers cloth-insulated wire that has gone brittle, a box with no ground, or a ceiling where someone before you spliced into the wiring in a way that does not hold up. None of that is visible until the old fixture comes down, which is why we are careful to look before we promise anything on price.
We also help with the choices around the fixture itself. Height over a dining table, the difference between damp-rated and wet-rated for bathrooms and porches, whether a heavy chandelier needs extra support, and whether your dimmer will work with the bulbs. A few minutes on these before installation saves a fixture that flickers, buzzes or hangs wrong.
When a fixture swap makes sense
- A fixture that is dated, broken or discolored. Cracked glass, rusted housings and yellowed shades are good reasons to replace the whole fixture instead of just the bulb.
- A room that needs a different kind of light. A pendant over an island, a vanity bar over a bathroom mirror, or a porch light with a motion sensor each do a different job.
- Flickering or a fixture that is warm to the touch. Heat or flicker can come from the wrong bulb, a loose connection, or old wiring. Worth checking before it gets worse.
- You are moving to LED. Some older fixtures do not take LED bulbs, or do not work with the dimmer on the wall. A new LED fixture solves both.
- A new location for a light. Moving a light means running new wire and setting a new box, so it is more than a swap.
How we install a light fixture
Look at the box and wiring
We shut off the circuit, take down the old fixture and inspect the box, the supports and the condition of the wire.
Fix what the old fixture was hiding
A weak box gets replaced, a loose splice gets redone, and brittle insulation gets addressed before the new fixture goes up.
Mount and connect
The new fixture is hung from the proper support at the right height and connected with correct, tight connections.
Test, adjust and clean up
We check the lights and dimmer, adjust the position, and clean up so you are left with only the new fixture.
What affects the price of light fixture installation
Replacing a fixture in the same spot is the simplest case. These factors change the price:
Same spot or new location
A swap on an existing box is quick. A new location means new cable, a new box and sometimes a new switch.
Weight and type of fixture
A heavy chandelier needs a box and support rated for it. A multi-light pendant takes longer to assemble and hang.
Ceiling height
Tall ceilings and stairwell fixtures need ladders or scaffolding and extra time.
Condition of old wiring
Brittle insulation, missing grounds or a failing box add work beyond the fixture itself.
Why Zavala Electric for light fixtures
The fixture is the part you see; the wiring behind it is the part that matters. We take the time to look at what the old fixture was hanging from, so the new one is not just on the same worn-out box.
You also get practical advice on height, wet versus damp ratings, and bulb compatibility before the fixture goes up.
Where we do this work
We hang fixtures in homes across Silver Spring, from 1930s bungalows to newer townhomes with high entry foyers. We also serve Wheaton, Rockville, Bethesda and Washington, DC.
Light Fixture Installation questions, answered
Can I replace a light fixture myself?
Many people do, and the connections are simple. The risk is in what you cannot see: a weak box, brittle old wire, or a circuit you thought was off but is not. If the ceiling has old wiring or the fixture is heavy, it is worth having it done by an electrician.
How high should a chandelier or pendant hang?
Over a dining table, the bottom of the fixture is typically around 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. In an entry or stairwell, it needs to clear heads with room to spare. We help set the height before we hang it.
What is the difference between damp-rated and wet-rated?
A damp-rated fixture is made for covered locations with humidity, such as a bathroom or covered porch. A wet-rated one can take direct rain and spray. Using a dry-rated fixture outdoors or in a shower area shortens its life and can be unsafe.
Why does my new LED fixture flicker with my dimmer?
Many older dimmers were designed for incandescent bulbs and do not work smoothly with LEDs. Pairing the fixture with a compatible LED dimmer usually fixes it.
Can you put a new fixture where there is no light now?
Yes. It takes running cable from a nearby power source, setting a box and adding a switch. How hard it is depends on the wall and ceiling construction.
Do old homes have special problems with fixtures?
Often. Cloth-insulated wire, fixtures with no ground, and ceilings with plaster and lath all turn up in homes built before the 1960s. We check each before hanging the new fixture.
